The word Basmati means “full of aroma” in Hindi language. The key to making basmati rice that is light, tender and fluffy is to rinse it first with water minimum two times, otherwise, the grains will be gummy and stick together. It only takes a few minutes to place the rice in a bowl with water, and then swish it around to release any excess starch. The water will be cloudy at first but after couple of rinses, it will be clear.
Ingredients
• For perfect basmati rice, you need add 1 ½ cups cold water for 1 cup of rice. If you add more than 1 ½ cups of water, the rice will become sticky like a cake. So add only 1 ½ cups water for 1 cup of rice
• First, add water in a bowl / pan and place it on high flame with the lid off. When the water starts to boil, reduce the heat to low, add the washed rice, stir it once and cover the pot.
• Simmer the rice for 10-12 minutes. Don't peek at the rice and don’t stir it!
• Move the pot off the heat and let the rice rest for 10 minutes with the lid on, so that rice absorbs the rest of the water slowly.
• At the end, use a fork or spoon to gently fluff the rice before serving.
